Introduction
The construction industry is one of the major sectors in Malaysia. However, it gives negative impacts especially in degrading environmental quality. Currently, 89% of the wastes collected are delivered to landfills. It shows that the construction industry is very dependent on the disposal area. As a consequence of this issue, Malaysia needs to develop the recycling and recovering industry to properly manage the waste.
Waste to Worth Park is a facility that aims to decrease the amount of construction waste by evaluating and recover the debris before sending them to the landfill. At the same time, it also provides the construction industry player with the waste minimisation strategies and recycling activities as well as a platform of information regarding waste management. This facility also promotes education and awareness not only for the construction industry player but also to the public.
Site Selection
The site chosen is the Jelutong construction waste collection area. It was the sole sanitary waste dump site for Penang Island in 1992. However, in 2002, the site was closed. Later, the site is reopened and it is converted into a site for the construction and demolition (c&d) waste handled by Penang Municipal Council.
There are several issues on the site such as the unsystematic process of extracting a proportion of recyclable items, landfill capacity in receiving waste, absence of a mechanism in processing recycling activities and outdated waste management system.
The facility is intended to minimise the problems that are happening on the site and at the same time educate people especially construction industry players in minimising construction waste.
